Does the Earth know the power of its own tectonic force?
Surprised by its own folds it buckles unannounced
Eternities of tension rumbling up to split the ground
Seismology aside, we’re still surprised, of course.
Why would you not be shocked by your own quick slipping plates?
But you admit no faults – how can you own these quakes?
I thought I had a measure of your surface strains and aches
Yet still I looked in wonder as I felt you slip and break.
Campaigns and rescuers from the rubble extricate
A measure of my vigor – of yours there is no trace
I stand in bricks and girders, I cannot see your face
Left to scour the surface, wait for tremors to abate.
